Mercenary's Rift
Mercenary's Rift, also called simply the rift or occasionally the Great Rift Valley, is the tectonic rift valley that spans the majority of the continent, seperating the western and eastern sides. It is far below sea level, but holds only a freshwater river at the bottom that empties into Wound Lake, as the northern and southern ends of the land have not yet broken apart to let the sea inward. The rift is formed by the divergence of the Eastern and Central tectonic plates and is characterized by basaltic volcanism along its length, extruded as the plates pull away from one another. This volcanic activity is small-scale and gentle, as the magma is very low in silica and therefore doesn't build up nearly as much tension as andesitic or rhyolitic magma does. The rift and the surrounding area is frequented by earthquakes, but they rarely reach particularly dangerous levels of seismicity.
Wound Lake
At the northern tip of the rift lies Wound Lake, situated at the triple point where the Eastern, Boreal, and Central plates meet. Its water is a hazardous chemical mix, upwelled from the rock beneath it as the ground stretches apart, and with no outflows to dispel salts.
